parent & coach, sandridge rovers terriers
After a few drinks with a group of dads - including a current SRFC Juniors Coach - I made a leap of faith and put my hand up to get involved in setting up a football team for my son and his friends.
The sole condition was that another dad would have to help! This duly happened and what started out as three dads playing football with their sons on Sunday mornings, grew into an U8 team that started at school age Year 2.
Fast forward 3 years and the boys all LOVE wearing their Sandridge hoodies and kit outside of match days. All they needed was an adult to create that opportunity to become a team.
We can only train every other weekend, but all the parents were cool with that from the outset. It now feels like an extended football family.
The club paid for my FA Level 1 and afforded me the space to make the team work both for the parents and me.
We have all really enjoyed seeing the boys’ battling spirit develop when they are behind in a match and how they work as a team. From a parent’s perspective, I see my son gaining vital life experiences in an outdoor team sport with his friends.
It’s an opportunity he and his friends may have missed had that other ‘brave’ dad and myself not made that pact after that fateful beer!
